This page will introduce you to some of the most effective visualization techniques you could ever learn and use as a bowler.

Part 2 - Advanced Visualization Techniques
When you visualize, include seeing and hearing yourself say your 'trigger phrase'
That's the phrase you always say that automatically sends you into your optimum bowling zone. See it and hear it as part of your customized pre-shot routine. Visualizing yourself saying the phrase, will condition your subconscious mind to say it...and thus to trigger your optimum state.
For those of you who have my Mastering The Mental Game Course, this is one of the major principles in chapter 5 "Create and trigger confident expectation".
This one phrase you create and say to yourself is one of the most effective methods for creating that all important 'confident expectation' so it happens automatically. Refer to the auditory tips and details in chapter 5 of your course for ways to make your internal phrase more powerful and automatic as a trigger.
The way to visualize yourself saying your 'key phrase' is to imagine you are seeing yourself bowl from another's point of view. In other words, Imagine yourself over there, across the bowling alley, bowling. That you, over there, says the phrase, enters a heightened mental state and bowls a perfect shot.
Wow..didn't that look great!
Now, repeat that entire sequence, or something like it ,from your own point of view. See it all as though you are looking out of your own eyes (be inside your body) and actually hear yourself say the phrase and feel yourself enter your optimum bowling state.
*remember to always include these two points of view when you visualize. (the technical terms for these two points of view are associated and disassociated)
Add the most important sounds
What are the most important sounds to imagine hearing when you bowl? It's not the sound of the ball hitting the pins! The most important sounds to recall are the one's you hear BEFORE you bowl. First, hear what you say to yourself when you know it's your turn.
Hear your key words and phrases as mentioned in J above. Finally, hear the external noises that happen as you prepare to pick up your ball and take aim. These sounds will be of people talking, of balls hitting pins in the background etc.
To visualize remembering these sounds, links them to your perfect shot and optimum bowling state. In other words, these sounds will trigger you to bowl at your best.
Once linked to this state in your visualization, they do the same thing in the real world...and will automatically trigger you to bowl enter your optimum bowling zone.
** This is why I have actual bowling alley sound effects on the CD. They trigger your optimum zone over and over. What could be better? But you have to 'install' this link separately - before you go bowling.
Raise your self image with visualization
If there's a hidden mental secret to bowling better this is it. The self image acts like a 'human thermostat'. Exceed the self image and it will compensate and pull you back down. The answer? Raise the self image. Here's how.
After you imagine yourself bowling a perfect shot, be sure and create a feeling of 'of course', or 'that's natural'. This is the essential secret of increasing your self image with visualization.
You must make certain you act as though those great shots you're making (in your imagination) are just your normal routine now. They don't phase you. They are well, just normal, just how you bowl!
To do this, do it first in your visualizations. Actually add that feeling after imagining yourself bowling that great shot. Then do it when you actually bowl those great shots for real.

Always visualize yourself making perfect shots
See yourself using exquisite form. Make your visualizations 'ideal'. This is an essential key in all visualization. Condition your mind to see perfect, ideal, glorious shots and to see them over and over and over.
Visualize when you're bowling and when you're not bowling
This creates a spaced repetition that has the effect of creating congruency. It conditions the mind to constantly see you bowling well. Also, you are in one emotional state when you're bowling and a different emotional state when you're not bowling. To visualize in both emotional states bridges your internal images across your neurology.
To visualize effectively, first see yourself from someone else's point of view
bowling a perfect strike. Then, imagine bowling a perfect strike from your own point of view...that is looking out your eyes.
Before every single shot, visualize making it first
This is one of the finest ways to visualize when you're bowling. Simply form the habit of seeing the shot made first, before you bowl it. Once you do this, and condition your neurology to 'follow' the picture, you'll improve dramatically.
Correct your shots with visualization
Every time you miss a shot, immediately visualize what it would have looked like had you made the shot perfectly. Ie..correct the image in your mind with your imagination.
Do the same thing, imagining yourself picking up various spare
combinations. When you see yourself picking up spares, see your different stance, position and timing when you visualize yourself from someone else's point of view.
When you see yourself bowling a spare out of your own eyes, notice how it feels a little different than when you're bowling a strike. Link these slightly different feelings into your visualizations of picking up spares.
Increase the number of times you actually visualize
yourself making perfect shots, including spares you want to make more often. Most people don't do enough visualizations 'in a row' to imprint the message on their subconscious mind. A couple images aren't enough. It the same principle you'd use with doing sit ups.
Doing 3 or 4 sit ups is ridiculous. You only consider doing, say, 25 or so. Do at least 10 visualizations of your perfect shot! Never less. Get into the habit of imagining a perfect shot 10 times in a row and watch what happens to your game!
Visualize just before falling asleep
We actually enter into what hypnotists call the 'hypnogogic zone' right before we fall asleep. It's simply a time when our subconscious is more receptive and responsive to images and ideas. It's a perfect time to plant the images you want.
Have a feeling of 'expectation' when you visualize
When you're seeing yourself bowl those perfect shots, allow a smile to form at the corner of your lips, from the feeling of knowing that this is what's coming. Create the feeling that you're seeing a 'preview of coming attractions'.
This is the single best way to apply the principle of belief and expectation to your images. Simply practice this until your mind automatically adds the feeling of expecting it to happen. Then it will!

and perfect spares in your mind about an hour or so before you go bowling. This is like saying to your body...'like this'.
After you visualize, say to your subconscious
"Continue to imagine me bowling better and better, and keep seeing me bowling strike after strike." This will cause your subconscious mind to continue visualizing for you!
